Winter Count for EDUC 3700 NAS
What is a Winter Count? Well, as stated by Lakota Winter Counts they are, "histories or calendars in which events are recorded by pictures, with one picture for each year."
Below are links to my blog posts as well as the musical representation for each of these blog posts. This all started because of my love of music and an inspiration from one of my professors.

While watching this video I kept thinking back to the abuse that was going on with these children and the bullying that was going on. The song True Colours was rerecorded by Artists Against Bullying and I thought that this fit with the class and the blog very well!

True Colours - Artists Against |
Although there are no lyrics with this song that is not what drew me to it. It was the title. While looking through the curriculum lab I felt that it was an exploration and a journey to find new sources. So, I felt that the Journey to the How suited this very well.

Journey To The How - Harry Gregson-Williams |
Throughout this video I kept noticing how the students and faculty would say how they were unsure and did not have resources. And my thoughts went to this song and how the pioneers did not have a lot when they were coming west. So, this song by The Band Perry fit with this thought very well.

The discussion around residential schools is often of grieving and healing. This is a journey that has to be taken so that people are able to come on and find their grounding place. This song by Enter the Haggis refers to the journey that is being taken home and how it can be a long and winding road. I felt that this fit in well with the discussion and video this class.

Long Way Home - Enter the Haggis |
In the discussion that we had with Ramona she talked about her daughter's spirit being able to help her and made her stronger. And I felt that her daughters spirit was what helped raise her up. So, the song You Raise Me Up (which is done by many artists but I prefer the harmonies in this one) talks about another being there to aid in making times better. This being Ramona's daughter's spirit aiding Ramona.

You Raise Me Up - Celtic Women |
In this discussion we talked a lot about values and respect. And, the feeling that I had when we were done our discussions that day and our visit with Roy and Andy was that of wholeness. This is much the same feeling I get when I am practicing my meditation. So, the music I selected was a piece similar to the meditation music that I use.

Tranquility - Time Solitaire. Music United with Nature. |
I decided to use this song because while we were having our discussions in class I brought up the idea of "western" songs being sung by traditional First Nations drummers and singers. There is a balance and blend in this song much like what is needed in the classrooms to deal with decolonization.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - Black Lodge Singers |
I decided to use this video because it showcases Jamie's dancing as well as some of the traditional drumming and singing. I thought this was important because it brings back the idea of authentic resources and going to the community for these resources to use in your classroom.

Jamie Medicine Crane performs at Drumheller Olympic Torch Celebrations |
I decided to use this video because it shows the local drummers performing at the International Peace Pow wow. Although this is not the exact group that was drumming at the CCH Year End Pow wow we had the opportunity to listen to drumming that was similar to this. And, when I hear the drummers I am taken back to my experience at the pow wow and what we learned while visiting St. Francis.

Blackfoot Confederacy 2010 - Interntn'l Peace Pow wow |
The reason I decided to use this video for the blog post is because it talks about working together and helping one another. And, I feel that by working together with the land we are able to accomplish more than working against it.

Share the land - The Guess Who |
I chose this piece of music because while we were out at Sundial Medicine Wheel these were the sounds that we could here and Narcisse said to listen to the noise around us. This is a piece that really relaxes me and allows me to think.
